In Vietnam, critical writers and bloggers are systematically persecuted. Following the PEN Cards Promo, Maartje Duin went to Vietnam to interview them.

In November I received a strictly confidential mail with strict instructions from PEN Netherlands.The organization is part of PEN International and stands up for oppressed writers worldwide. 
Attached was a list that is not allowed to circulate freely on the internet. There were names and addresses of imprisoned writers in countries ranging from Spain to Bahrain and Cameroon. The request was that a Christmas card be sent to each person. No Bethlehem Scenes or other religious symbols were allowed because some writers were persecuted for their religion: a simple greeting would suffice.

Time for Government to Begin Delivering on Human Rights

APRIL 10, 2013 (Washington, DC) – The Vietnamese government should use the opportunity of the upcoming US-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue to release political prisoners and make commitments to end the persecution of bloggers, land rights activists, and other peaceful critics, Human Rights Watch said today. The 17^th US-Vietnam Human Rights dialogue will take place in Hanoi beginning on April 12, 2013.

“The Vietnamese government has produced an avalanche of political show trials as it tries to keep a lid on growing dissent,” said Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch. “The US should use this opportunity to make it clear that Vietnam needs to engage in serious reforms to improve the rights situation, or there will be severe consequences, including damage to relations with the US.”

(Washington, DC) APRIL 10, 2013 – Tổ chức giám sát nhân quyền Human Rights Watch (HRW) phát biểu ngày hôm nay là Chính phủ Việt Nam cần nhân cơ hội cuộc Đối thoại Nhân quyền Mỹ – Việt sắp tới để phóng thích các tù nhân chính trị và cam kết chấm dứt việc truy bức các blogger, các nhà hoạt động về chủ quyền đất đai cũng như những người chỉ trích ôn hoà khác. Cuộc Đối thoại Nhân quyền Việt – Mỹ sẽ diễn ra tại Hà Nội từ ngày 12/4/2013.

Brad Adams, giám đốc phụ trách Châu Á của HRW, phát biểu: “Chính phủ Việt Nam đã dựng lên một loạt phiên toà mang tính trình diễn khi tìm cách ngăn chặn làn sóng bất mãn đang ngày một dâng cao. Hoa Kỳ cần tận dụng cơ hội này để nêu rõ rằng Việt Nam cần tiến hành cải cách nghiêm chỉnh nhằm cải thiện tình hình nhân quyền, nếu không họ sẽ phải đối mặt với những hậu quả nghiêm trọng, kể cả việc tổn hại đến mối quan hệ với Hoa Kỳ.” 

Vietnam: Make Rights a Priority on EU Visit

Stress Need to Free Dissidents, Respect Religious Freedom, End Forced Labor

OCTOBER 29, 2012, New York – European Union President Herman Van Rompuy should publicly press Vietnam to release all political prisoners and detainees, respect freedom of religion, and abolish forced labor in drug detention centers during his visit from October 31 to November 2, 2012, Human Rights Watch said today.

Earlier in October Human Rights Watch sent a memo, summarized below, to the European Union outlining key recommendations on each of these issues. The memo includes the names of some political prisoners who should be immediately and unconditionally released.

“While Europe sees Vietnam as an important trading partner, President Van Rompuy should not relegate human rights to a secondary issue,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Right Watch. “Vietnam regularly imprisons its citizens for asking for democracy and the same freedoms that Europeans take for granted. Van Rompuy has an ethical obligation to make clear to the Vietnamese government that it cannot operate a repressive dictatorship without consequences for its relations with the EU.”

Ngày 29/10/2012, New York – Chủ tịch Hội Đồng Châu Âu, ông Herman Van Rompuy cần phải công khai đòi Việt Nam thả tất cả những tù nhân chính trị, tôn trọng quyền tự do tôn giáo và bãi bỏ hình thức lao động cưỡng bức trong các trung tâm cai nghiện trong chuyến ghé thăm của mình từ 31 tháng 10 tới mùng 2 tháng 11 năm 2012, Tổ Chức Theo Dõi Nhân Quyền (HRW) tuyên bố ngày hôm nay.

Vào đầu tháng 10 HRW đã gửi một báo cáo, được tóm lược ở dưới đây, tới Hội Đồng Châu Âu để đưa ra những khuyến nghị quan trọng về các vấn đề nêu trên. Báo cáo bao gồm tên của một số tù nhân chính trị cần được trả tự do ngay lập tức và vô điều kiện.

“Trong khi Châu Âu đánh giá Việt Nam như một đối tác thương mại quan trọng, Chủ tịch Van Rompuy không nên coi quyền con người như một chủ đề phụ,” Brad Adams, giám đốc tại Châu Á của HRW, nói. “Việt Nam thường xuyên bắt giữ những công dân của mình bởi họ đòi hỏi dân chủ và tự do – những thứ mà người Châu Âu coi là điều đương nhiên. Ông Van Rompuy có trách nhiệm đạo đức phải nói cho chính phủ Việt Nam rằng họ không thể tiếp tục hành xử một cách độc tài và đàn áp người dân của mình mà không chịu hậu quả trong mối quan hệ với EU”.

Phải kể đặc biệt là điều 88 ‘’Tuyên truyền chống nhà nước CHXHCHVN’’ và điều 258 ’’Lợi dụng các quyền tự do dân chủ, xâm phạm lợi ích của Nhà nước”.
